For me high school is what made me the person I am today. People say high school could be the hardest four years of your life, but for me it was life changing. From my influential teachers to my cheerleading coaches I could not have asked for a better experience. High school is the reason I know I want to be a secondary education teacher with my focus in English. It is the reason I know to never judge someone and to always hear people out. I would never want to change the high school experience I had.
The first person to truly influence me in high school was my cheerleading coach in ninth grade. This woman, Coach Lauren, taught me to never give up on myself. I wasn’t the best cheerleader, but she taught me that practice makes permanent and to stop comparing myself to others. Having her as my coach also taught me how to be a leader. In 10th grade I became cheerleading captain. Obtaining this role was a very big because it meant all the girls on the team and my coach respected me as a person and thought I had the best leadership qualities for the part. Being named captain made me realize I am more than just a wallflower, I am a leader.
During high school I was always very unsure of what I wanted to do as my future career. I always wanted to help people or children, so I always went back and forth with being a social or working in CPS. Entering high school I was never a big English student, but in 10th grade I couldn’t help but love the subject. My teacher was so well educated and our curriculum had such amazing books that actually made the students want to read. From that point on I never minded doing my assigned English reading or writing essays. Then I entered 11th grade and I never would have thought I would receive a better teacher than my 10th grade one, but I did. Mr. Gott is the main reason I wanted to be a high school English teacher. He was so intellectual, made us truly appreciate our novels, and taught us how to improve our writing skills. He made me realize being a teacher is one of the most helpful and rewarding jobs.
High school, as everyone knows, is made up of cliques. The “clique” I ended up in in 9th grade was not type of people I wanted to surround myself with. I was unhappy with where I ended up but I wasn’t sure how to handle the situation. I asked myself daily, “should try finding new friends or just try and stick through it, maybe it will get better?” After long nights of staying up and thinking or talking to my mom for advice, I came to conclusion to try and find a new group of friends. Doing this was the best decision of my life and is how I found myself and the type of people I fit in with. I’ll always be friendly with my old “clique” but high school is about finding yourself and that is exactly what I did. Everyone has made good and bad decisions and I could not be happier with the decision I had made back in 9th grade. Without having an open mind and being brave I wouldn’t be the person I am today.
From coaches to English teacher to cliques the many aspects of high school make up who I am today. Without the influences of my coach I wouldn’t have the characteristics I do today. Without my English teachers I might still not know what I want to do as my future career. And without the mindset I had back in 9th grade I could be a completely different person. I will always remember my four years of high school as such an amazing experience and I wouldn’t want to change it for the world.
